Minimum Wage

The minimum wage for workers is possibly the most clear-cut but varied way that states differ from each other and the federal government. The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 per hour since 2009. Many states continue to keep this status quo, while others mandate double this amount or more.

States of Democracy divides states into four groups based on their minimum wage laws:

  • Bad (0): $7.25 per hour (same as federal)
  • Below Average (1): more than $7.25 but less than $12 per hour
  • Good (2): more than $12 but less than $14 per hour
  • Very Good (3): $14 per hour or more
